2. What program do you use besides paint?

You should use Photoshop. A free trial download is available at http://www.adobe.com

In Photoshop, use the Extract tool. You get it by pressing Alt + Ctrl + X. In the extract tool, you use the highliter to carefully trace the edge of the object you are extracting. Be sure there are no gaps in your traced outline. Then use the paint bucket tool to fill in the object. Hit the OK button, and it will remove your background, preserving anything that was within the highlighted area.
